As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is tried.
He is a Shield to all those who trust and take refuge in Him.
II Samuel 22:31 (AMP)
One spring morning I woke up early and peered out my bedroom window. The sky was clear and it looked like it was going to be a nice day. I jumped out of bed, threw on a pair of sweat pants, grabbed a jacket and my sneakers and headed out the door. My usual Saturday morning routine includes a walk in the nearby mountain park. The park is always bustling with people and parking is often scarce. However, this particular morning, there was plenty of parking available and not a lot of visitors in the park.
I felt refreshed, energetic and up for a new challenge. Instead on my normal walk along the base of the mountain trail, I embarked on the steep two-mile climb up the mountain road. As I started walking, easing into a comfortable stride, I began to keep myself focused by whispering a tune under my breath. Almost immediately, I sensed the leading of God and a calmness around me that always accompanies His presence.
Midway up the mountain, the sunny day turned into clouds and a light breeze blew through the trees. Just a few strides later, those clouds released a light, cool sprinkle of rain. I had not reached my destination and decided to pick up my pace. As I did, it seemed the sprinkle turned into a drizzle. I contemplated whether I should turn back and go home in fear of getting caught in a down pour, but without much more than a thought, I continued my walk, still humming to myself.
As I neared the final stretch to the top of the mountain, a blanket of fog rolled in and visibility became difficult. I could barely see the young couple approaching me as they were walking down the mountain a few feet ahead. I spoke, “good morning,” and kept my pace. By the time I reached the top of the mountain, everything around me was a mass of whiteness and I could not see a thing. My thoughts began to race; the calmness gave way to fear, and the fear to utter panic.
As I reached the top of the mountain, I found my way over to the rest area and stood straining to make out anything familiar. Encircled by this great white mass, I settled the emotions that had risen up inside me; the calmness returned, and simultaneously, I was reminded of the lyrics to the song I had been humming…
I will trust in You always. Oh, Ancient of Days. For You are the Rock of the Ages. I will trust in You always. Thy Word of Lord is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. My faith is in every Word You speak, cause Your Word is all that will last. I will trust in You always. Oh, Ancient of Days. For You are the Rock of the Ages. I will trust in You always…
Life is full of challenges. And often times life’s challenges make it difficult for us to see our way. As a result, in our humanness, the tendency is to react to the situation causing us to lose our focus, becoming emotional and exhibiting behaviors that draw us out of the presence of God. A lack of physical sight will cause us to lose spiritual sight as well. That is why it is so important that we learn to trust in God during those difficult times.
If I trust and believe in God as the Great Shepherd that He is, then my thoughts, my emotions and my behavior will line up with that belief. Emotions will get you off track and open the door to confusion—the trick of the enemy. Therefore, it becomes vital that our emotions line up with the Word of God.
Daily the Spirit of God is leading and guiding us. From the time we rise in the morning until we return to the comforts of our beds at night, God is with us. However, our ability to be fully led by God is contingent on our ability to trust and rely on Him. To fully allow God to take the lead in our lives, we must first trust Him. In order to trust Him, we must know and understand the character of God – that He loves us and desires His very best for us.
